The £9.5 million is just a down payment - oh dear! How sad! Nevermind! Darling Papa will no doubt help the darling boy out like he did with Andrew in the Guiffre case. And let’s not forget the litigants had insurance in place in case they lost.
The insurance covers £16.2m but the judge has ruled that the claimants’ case was "unreasonable to a high degree" and they should expect to pay much more than the original sum proposed and has declined to set a ceiling on recoverable costs.
The reasons he cited were to do with the conduct of the trial but I wonder whether the immediate public reaction of Prince Harry and Doreen Lawrence afterwards also played a part; could ‘whitewash’ turn out to be the most expensive single word in history?
The insurers could declare the policy null and void of course if it is deemed any of the litigants or witnesses lied during the trial. Whether that happens remains to be seen.
