No doubt there are worthy recipients but the whole thing is cheapened into tackiness by these sorts of nominations. RH Tawney, long ago, refused one, asking what harm he’d ever done the Labour Party.

Sir Fry has a “husband”. It is usual for a woman whose husband has been given a gong to acquire the honorary title of “lady” but what happens in cases such as Fry’s..? Does his friend get an honorary “sir” by the backdoor, so to speak?
