Why Should You Be Treated With 'Understanding And Fairness' When You Haven't Shown Any?

Asylum seekers housed in an Essex hotel that has been the target of protests and far-right incitement for two weeks have told the Guardian how the Bell hotel, where they had previously felt safe, has been transformed since demonstrations began. In a letter sent to the Guardian one of the men living in the hotel, Nabil, who said he had previously been attacked while out walking, called to be treated with “understanding and fairness” and for people not to resort to harmful stereotypes.

We, as refugees, are frequently labeled with harmful stereotypes – that we came only for benefits, that we live off taxpayers, or that we are uneducated or disrespectful. These assumptions hurt us, hinder our integration, and most importantly, do not reflect the truth. I did not come here seeking wealth or running from poverty. In fact, I had a stable life back in my country, Yemen. I had a job, a house, a car, and everything I needed to live with dignity. What forced me to leave was not economic hardship, but persecution and fear for my safety and the safety of my family.

Yet we aren't told where your family is. And I can't believe the 'Guardian' would pass up the chance to challenge the 'myth' that the invasion is made up of mostly single men if they could, so I'm suspicious already that they are back in the Yemen. 

We refugees are not here to take advantage of the system. We are here to rebuild our lives, to work, and to contribute. We will pay taxes like anyone else, not to “drain the system”, but because we believe that mutual respect and responsibility are the foundation of any strong and united society.

I believe the same of national borders and immigration laws, both of which you've knowingly and willingly ignored. So you'll understand if I treat you exactly as you deserve based on your actions. And your claims that you will pay taxes ring hollow, when we didn't ask you to come here in the first place, and you came anyway regardless of our wishes and our laws. You're not a desired worker or guest, you're a burglar.

Censorship Never Works The Way You Assume It Will...

In the last two weeks, thousands of “adult only” and “not safe for work” games have disappeared from Steam and itch.io – two of the most prominent distribution platforms for PC video games – as they scrambled to comply with stricter rules mandated by payment processors such as MasterCard, Visa, and PayPal. These rules were established after a campaign by the organisation Collective Shout, which urged payment processors to stop facilitating payments to platforms hosting “rape, incest and child sexual abuse-themed games”. But the new rules have affected a far broader range of games – including some award-winning titles.

And of course, it’s hitting those who aren’t exactly known for their quiet acceptance of any halt to their desires, unfortunately for its government sponsors: 

But these include games that explore queer identity and sexuality, such as Radiator 2 by Robert Yang, a former teacher at New York University’s Game Center. And the rules have also hit games that do not depict sex in any way at all. These include Last Call, a game about surviving domestic violence by award-winning game designer Nina Freeman, and Consume Me, a game about disordered eating which has also won numerous industry awards.

In a Bluesky post, Yang described Collective Shout and payment processors as “waging culture war against LGBTQ people and sexual expression”, while Consume Me’s developers told Wired that it is “completely unacceptable that payment processors are conducting censorship-by-fiat and systematically locking adult content creators out of platforms”.

A woman has admitted to fraudulently pocketing more than £26,000, which donors believed would be sent to the Royal National Lifeboat Institution. Eileen McDonagh, 33, pleaded guilty to four charges of fraud by false representation and a further charge of concealing, disguising, converting, transfering or removing criminal property at a Bath Magistrates’ Court hearing on 22 May. McDonagh, of Redbridge, London, was convicted of using a card machine to collect money that donors thought was going to the RNLI.

A spokesperson for the RNLI said: “It is disappointing that generous donations intended to save lives at sea did not reach our charity. “RNLI face-to-face fundraisers carry an official ID card and we would encourage people to check this before donating if they are unsure.”

Martin McDonagh, 35, of Walthamstow, London, also appeared in court and pleaded not guilty to the concealing, disguising, converting, transferring or removing of criminal property amounting to £4,151. The pair were granted unconditional bail and sent to Bristol Crown Court, where they will appear on 27 June for their next hearing.

Children will be taught that 'worrying and feeling down' are not mental-health conditions in an attempt to curb Britain's spiralling worklessness crisis.

Surely we should find out where this message is coming from, first? 

Teachers have been told they must avoid encouraging pupils to self-diagnose 'normal feelings' as more serious problems such as anxiety and depression.

The radical change in policy will be issued in new guidance to schools amid escalating concern over the number of young people being signed off sick.

Sounds like it'd be a good idea to start with the GPs then to me... 

Bridget Phillipson, the Education Secretary, told The Telegraph: 'For too many children today, their understanding of how to manage their mood and regulate their emotions is coming from social media, rather than their parents, teachers or trained professionals.

Ah, no, of course it's got to be blamed on the new Big Bad (and the thing the Labour Party are desperate to control). How fortuitous, eh? 

The changes come in new instructions on how to teach RHSE, which were issued last week. Some of the instructions surrounding mental health had been contained in a previous draft of the guidance, which was drawn up by the last Tory government.

More modern Tory nonsense coming to light? Quelle surprise, eh? 

Ms Phillipson's changes to the schools guidance are the latest evidence of concern within Downing Street over the growing scale of mental-health claims. This is despite Labour attacking the Tories when it was still in opposition for suggesting that too many people were being signed off with milder conditions.

Yes, well, that was then, this is now, when they are finding out that being in power is nothing like being in opposition.

The police demanded to know why she had visited Israel, whether she was planning to go back and whether she felt safe to go there. ‘I asked them, “What do you think happened? It was the first time she learned someone had reported her to Prevent.

A Durham Constabulary spokeswoman said: ‘Each Prevent referral is reviewed to determine whether further action is required including, where appropriate, assessment to determine if there is an immediate security threat, or whether a vulnerable person is at genuine risk of radicalisation.’

Well, you clearly failed here. Assuming your goal was to do all that in the first place, anyway.
