Why Is The Answer Never 'I'll Start Up My Own!'..?

Kemi Alemoru on a controvery that had, admittedly, passed me by...
To understand the viral outrage and fierce gatekeeping over what at first appears to be an innocuous beauty tip, you need to understand some crucial context...

Oh, you'll never guess..!

...the beauty industry is a notoriously inequitable space for black women.

*sighs*

Being able to walk into a high-street beauty store such as Boots or Superdrug and find products that cater to darker skin tones and afro hair textures is only a very recent phenomenon.

As commenters at Tim Worstall's take on this point out there's good reason for this, and the impression she gives is a false one anyway...

This lack of availability doesn’t reflect a lack of demand.

If there's a demand, why don't you fill it?

Black hair shops are rarely black-owned, and their products often aren’t either (an irony highlighted in the new ITV drama Riches).

So the complaint has changed from 'Not enough!' to 'Not us!'..?

Black women’s frustration (Ed: ah, the Royal 'We' here?) with the beauty industry is about far more than the inconvenience of having to travel further for the right product and paying a premium for it.

I think that's your frustration. Or did 'black women' elect you to speak for them?

Black women are just tired: tired of being mistreated, and tired of being undervalued by the retailers and brands that market to and profit from them.

I'll echo Tim. Sod off. And when you get there, sod off again!

  1. There are plenty of countries that are predominantly populated by blacks. Why don't these whiners ever move to one of them?
As for me I want to live in a country populated by white people like me; ie England but without all the invaders and their enablers.

  2. If he/she/it/them do not buy in these bigoted shops then the shops will not profit from them.
The many countries with one of the many shades of "black" population must have shops and factories stuffed with the correct stuff. Is on-line shopping not working? An enterprising person must see an export/import opportunity here.
Make an argued, costed case and approach The Dragons' Den.
It is right up the Beeb's street.
By the way, 'n' that, what do our huge silent and ignored "Chinese" race do?

    1. They go about their business without fuss. If only others did...

  3. I seem to recall that there was a fairly noisy farting contest with our chocolate-coloured cousins over the Pond; about how cosmetic items, potions, useless but extremely-necessary hair straighteners etc., were subject to being behind locked shield areas, because they were, strangely enough, the target of choice for shop-lifting, or as we straight talkers say: THEFT.

The raucous cries of ‘Racist Discrimination’ echoed up and down the aisles worked, at least in certain shops who didn’t have the courage to state; “We will not help thieves”, and the locks were removed: AND THE THEFT STATISTICS ROCKETED.

    1. Businesses writing it off, presumably. And prices increasing for all as a result.
