Presence of mind is everything

This is the second of two videos, the other being here, dealing with self-defence of the smaller, lighter, more decrepit, whatever, person when attacked and beyond the good advice in the videos, there are also other issues I really must get to.

My comments

1.  A couple of seconds past 6 mins, the lady makes a comment that, despite knowing he won't hurt her in this demo, it's still scary for her ... and she's a strong, sporty gal.  Yes ... but she must not think it's only a male-female thing ... it's also a crazed middle-eastern, uncivilised thing.

2.  In fact, it is the very intimidation which is debilitating.  This sudden attack scenario can certainly benefit from the moves in the videos under certain circumstances, e.g. always use full body if poss against thumbs, not against whole hand grip etc. Girl must always use her strongest muscles in those thighs or knees if poss.

Good but there are certain realities:

a.  The type of male who gangrapes or stabs is either white street gang, black hood dwellers or death cult groomers, rapists and stabbers.

b.  It's not so much the single perv dragging her into the bushes or following her from the train station, it's all these others.  Why is it no longer the former?  Because she's no longer stupid enough to walk alone from a station or bus stop, it's not safe.

c.  So her [or an] old man's defences really need to be of another kind these days and it's as simple as this - any self-defence whatever will land the victim behind bars, unless feminazi, and the perps are protected ... plus they know it.

d.  Therefore, the first question is ... if you're prepared to go out and any part of that day is alone, then what is your terminal force position?  In other words, if fight or flight are not options, what is your final position you've long ago determined you'll take?  There are sayings:
# May as well be hanged for a sheep as a lamb;
# If we're treading on thin ice, may as well dance.
So what is that position ... for you?  Taser? Acid? Knife? Gun?  Mace?  Pepper?  Either way you're in prison ... what's your final ... and therefore opening solution?

Don't kid yourself, believing in fantasies ... if eight death culters surround you out of nowhere ... what is your first and final response?  If less than terminal, then I suggest you plan out different routes, different ways.  Never alone either, esp. if female or old.

e.  Which brings me to my second last point.  Look at either of those two men in the videos.  And those are controlled men.  If crazed, drugged out of their Floydian skulls or whatever, it just heightens that brute power.  You're dealing with a beast.

And not just one quite often.  Time to get real.  Think this thing through and plan accordingly.  As of now.

f.  My last point is the one which started this post, implied or express in the video ... presence of mind.  It's all to do with that.  You must be calm enough to think out or even remember learned counter moves.  Your life at that moment = utter calm.  Any soldier can tell you that.

So that lady's expression of fear is not going to help her.  Utter calm in decision making is her survival ... or not.  Plus dropping into the breathing routine under duress.

  1. 90% (and possibly more) of the training a soldier (or martial artist) needs (man or woman, though women considerably more so) is “conditioning” both to commit violence against another, and ‘react’ when confronted by it. We're both social and experiential creatures, not naturally violent towards others, and (unless exposed/experienced previously) liable to be shocked and ‘freeze’ when confronted with the new/unexpected.

In common with the typical ‘committed’ martial artist (if you’re big and hard why would you bother with all that effort?), I was small, weak, nerdy (national health glasses in the upper band at Grammar School – i.e. the perfect target?) and so started training (Judo and Shotokan Karate) at 4. Being 50 mumble now I’ve trained in Kyoushinkai, Shorinji Kempo, Aikido, Wing Chun, Lau Gar, Escrima/Kali/Arnis, Bando, Pencak Silat, Muay Thai and Krabi Krabong, Capoeira, (miltary) Savate, (military) Krav Maga, Kalaripayattu, Western boxing and Greco-Roman wrestling as well as forces unarmed combat training (yes, I need to get a life).

And? I’ve known many skilled (much more so than I) women, but the simple fact remains (as they will attest) that ‘the average’ woman has little to zero chance against the average man in any violent conflict. Neither (much like the one in a billion Olympic champion woman being relatively easily beaten by an average male club athlete in every sport involving strength) will even the strongest, most skilled and prepared woman stand a chance with an experienced and aggressive male (even if formally untrained. The average criminal is not going to be older, overweight, smaller, weaker, disabled or … inexperienced/reluctant). That woman was afraid for good reason, being experienced she ‘knew’ she stood no chance in reality in a direct ‘fight’.

And therein lies the crux. The smaller, weaker, the disabled or old cannot approach such a situation as a ‘fight’. It is a situation (a literal life or death struggle) which they must avoid and or escape, using any/all methods possible. Any and all!

So? My first paragraph, says it all. If (and there are always warning signs/signals seen in retrospect and noticing, and crucially acting on, those should be of paramount importance – NB. Notice how the rise in assaults coincides exactly with the rise in social conditioning to not notice such signs or be seen as ‘racist’ etc.) he/she finds themselves in such a situation they must ‘already’ be prepared (mentally more than physical skill) to do the unthinkable – bite, scratch, claw, gouge, snap, stab, whatever it takes to break free and then (hopefully) escape. ‘Technique’ is of less importance than ‘will’ (and the simple refusal to give up).

Being brutally honest the ‘best’ (and arguably only) method for a woman or older/disabled man to survive such an encounter is ...to carry a firearm and be trained/prepared (yet again conditioned) to use it ‘lethally’. (In The UK, and many other places, such an option is 'illegal' as are every other method/tool of self-defence. If the risk is great enough you must ask yourself whether you prefer to be "judged by twelve, or carried by six". Freedom is making choices and accepting consequences).

The old saw/meme “have a plan how to kill everyone you meet” isn’t about aggressive behaviour, it’s being mentally aware, prepared and ready to react if and as necessary. But … the absolute best defence is as always … be somewhere else (avoid the X).

    1. Anonymous, good advice there. Situational awareness is crucial, noting movements of people around us, recognising potential threats before it's too late to escape. As an untrained old man flight is my first and only realistic option.

Your self defence training reminds me of an ex Royal Marine I worked with. He hadn't had training in all the disciplines you mentioned but he was a master in judo, he was obsessed. So much so that having been taught by so and so, who had been trained by an old master, he was invited to Japan to pass on some of this 'lost' knowledge. Sadly anything useful was truly lost when he passed away.

  2. First, the technique of pushing the man forward over or along the victim often causes a broken nose of the victim. Roll over if at all possible. Having trained in martial arts, and taught, over forty years I can tell you it is of no use in itself for street encounters.
In a combat situation there is no fine motor movement so fancy techniques are out of the window. Instead, using the forearm held by the hand into the face, nothing fancy in that.
What martial arts will do is give you some conditioning to take blows and some idea of evasion and attack which is slightly better than nothing at all. Recovery is quicker having conditioned the body somewhat.
My teacher and I taught master classes. But anyway martial arts are not what they are hawked as.

  3. Remember that the Police and Justice system are not on your side. The laughable justice system we have in the UK actually works against us for issues like this. The law is set up so the strong are able to complete the crime and the law then steps in and prosecutes. All following a nice neat process. God forbid someone should defend themselves, or others, and create another crime for them to process. Then the victim has their life dragged out and being promiscious when you are 17 means that the were asking for it at 27. Then if the assailant is found guilty then they are punished, if what happens can be called punishment.

It needs a massive overhaul and not by the bunch of woke do gooders that have infiltrated all aspects of our justice system. I blame them more than the criminals as they have enabled the bad guys behaviors and ensured that the general public are defenceless.
